We commissioned Yurok artist and environmental activist Mahlija Florendo for this design, which shows a California Quail amidst natural and cultural elements. The rotund and intricately-patterned bird, known as ter-ker-kue in Yurok, is often mentioned in Yurok stories and can be found scratching the ground in scrubby habitat in the western US and Baja California, Mexico.
The Yurok Tribe in northwest California, where California Quails can be found, is committed to improving the relationship between humans and the natural world. The Yurok Tribe Wildlife Department focuses on the management, research, conservation and restoration of wildlife and the ecosystems in which they live. One of their flagship projects is reintroducing critically-endangered California Condors to the region.
We will donate 20% of profits from this tee to the Yurok Tribe to support its holistic work in ecological and cultural stewardship. Read more about their efforts here.
