Loggerhead Shrikes are passerines that act like raptors, hunting for insects, lizards, mammals and birds up to its size. Lacking a raptor's talons, it immobilizes prey like mice with a swift chomp to the neck with its thick, hooked bill, and then snaps the victim's neck by violently shaking its blocky head. Known as the Butcherbird for its habit of impaling prey on thorns and barbed wire, it's no wonder Audubon describes it as a "headbanging, prey-impaling death bird."
