Artist Profile: Andrew Meiborg

Andrew Meiborg is a wildlife field technician and has worked on projects across the country, from California to Florida, involving diurnal raptors, owls and songbirds. He’s been part of the HawkWatch International seasonal team since 2018, counting hawks at Chelan Ridge in Washington, the Goshute Mountains in Nevada, and the Grand Canyon in Arizona. When he’s not conducting field research, Andrew enjoys exercising and observing, photographing, and drawing wildlife.

Favorite bird?
Blue-headed Vireo.
What do you seek to communicate in your work?
Having spent a lot of my time watching, photographing, and handling these birds, I do my best to show the personalities and individuality a lot of people may not realize they have.
How has nature been a source of inspiration for you?
It has inspired me to be less rigid in my art. When you look around in nature you realize nothing follows strict rules. Plants and animals are amazing at adapting to their current situation.
Tell us about your most memorable bird experience.
My first spring migration after learning to ID birds in the east. Warblers, vireos, tanagers everywhere. I couldn’t believe it had been there my whole life, and I just didn’t know about it.
What inspired your design for our HawkWatch International collection?
I love older art and design styles, where logos and apparel feature detailed, unique drawings rather than the kind of simplified shapes you see everywhere now. The raptor head collage is inspired from the old Star Wars movie posters, which I’ve always loved.
