What do you seek to communicate in your work?

People, like anything in our natural world, are stunningly complex and diverse. Colors, shapes, sizes, expression, behavior, environment—humanity lives in these details. Whatever I make, I want folks to be inspired to pause and look a little closer.

How has nature been a source of inspiration for you?

Throughout my life so far, no matter what’s happening, happened, or going to happen, nature has grounded me in a perspective of joy, timelessness, and curiosity. The merest interatction—sun on my face or a bird in flight—recalibrates me.

Tell us about your most memorable bird experience.

It was a winter on the chilly South Carolina coast. The ocean was a churning grey, the horizon a thin line of golden light. In the water, a pod of dolphins migrated in a line, their fins pointing skyward at Brown Pelicans flying in the shaft of light above.
