Few birds have captured national media attention like the Steller’s Sea Eagle that turned up in Alaska in August 2020, and then flew thousands of miles around the continent, to the delight of North American birders. Only about 4,000 birds remain in their native range of far eastern Russia and parts of Asia. With a seven-foot wingspan, they dwarf their smaller cousins, the Bald Eagle, and they’re awesome hunters, known to fight off brown bears and hunt on the sea ice of the Russian Arctic.
