#54 Redhead

Aptly named, breeding male Redheads cut a striking figure. The females and young are a warm brown with the same blue-gray bill as the males. These social ducks gather in the winter by the tens of thousands in the lagoons of Laguna Madre on the Gulf Coast of Texas and Mexico. In the summer, they breed in reedy ponds along the prairie potholes of the Great Plains and West. Females frequently sneak their eggs into the nests of other duck species, in a strategy known as brood parasitism.
