The rattling call of the blue-gray Belted Kingfisher heralds its presence along rivers and shorelines as it plunges for fish and other aquatic prey. Big-headed, stocky, and heavy-billed, this kingfisher nests in earthen burrows and is widespread throughout North America. The female is particularly striking with its rust-orange belly band.
