#31 Purple Gallinule

One of North America’s most colorful birds, the Purple Gallinule is the star of any freshwater marsh, where it steps across water lilies with its long yellow legs and toes in search of invertebrates like frogs. A year-round resident of wetlands from Florida to Central America, this bird also breeds in a handful of southeastern U.S. states. Vagrants have turned up from Iceland to South Africa.

This patch is part of our Pride Collection, which supports Brave Trails, a national non-profit organization dedicated to LGBTQ+ youth leadership.
